Hello,
I'm a dad new to the complexities of full competition kart racing. My son is a 12-year old eager to step up from rental series to a competition kart; however, I'm first trying to find my way around all types of chassis and engines, before I decide to dive in. So, you can see I'm in the very early stages of learning.
For a 12 year old in the Puget Sound area, what is a good engine to start with? I've visited websites like this, PGP, Sumas and a couple of others and I still can't get my bearings on which one would have the most options to race on. LO206 seems to be growing and it looks more straightforward so it seems like the best next step for a kid coming from rentals; but I'm still not sure where my son would be able to race it (e.g. there's no Junior LO206 at PGP). The 125cc seems more established and with faster speed capabilities; but seems like a steeper learning curve for a new racing dad like me.
I stopped by PSGKA last Saturday and good man called Joe gave me some pointers already and I'm looking forward to watching the Apr 24th race; but it'd also be great if people could chime in with their insight/suggestions for me to consider.
Thanks, JB

I'm on the road you are looking at. My suggestion would be to go with the LO 206 package so that you can race at PGP (King county does not allow PGP to run 2 strokes). Another advantage is that with the sealed engine, you can spend your time working on chassis setup, and when/f you need engine parts they are relatively inexpensive. I wouldn't fret about racing with Juniors or Seniors (I "threw" by son in with seniors and he does pretty good and enjoys the competition). David Buck is selling a very nice chassis that his son ran with an LO 206 and could give you some excellent insights as well. Its posted in the four stroke section of this site.
